Nature's Imperfections - Concept

To many, nature is often expected to be a realm of flawless beauty where symmetry is idealised, and imperfections are non-existent. I believe that it is within nature's imperfections that it's true allure and unique character resides. This adds depth, charm and authenticity to the natural world.

This design aims to represent the beauty in the imperfections of the human body. As an individual affected by Ollier's disesase, I moulded the shape of this pavilion to mimic an infected bone in my shoulder. All in all, I’ve intended to spread positivity of life's unexpected twists in the design.

The design is intended to depict 'grounded design' or 'grounded architecture' by emphasising elements that connect people more closely to the earth/ground. For instance, artificial seating is minimal and the choice of material is intended to void of obstructions to the view. The design is propped up through elevating the ground, further emphasising the grounded design concept.

I had decided to use the Weaverbird and Ladybug plug-ins in Grasshopper in order to develop my design intentions. Using weaverbird, I used a grid of points to create the overall composition of the pavilion, and then had created a frame to create the meshes, as well as to thicken the pavilion. Ladybug was deployed in order to test the sun path and radiation of the design, which had encouraged me to include the windows on the pavilion as a function.

Initial Sketch: Symmetrical shapes, sharp edges

Final skeletal design: Organic shapes and more fluid

There are 2 main materials of the design:

Steel:

Galvanised steel with gold ctc powder coating to have a reflective finish. The choice of materials aims to reflect the natural surroundings and to also have an obvious beauty aspect. This is a theme that can be found in grounded architecture.

Glass:

The use of glass creates an experience within the pavilion, giving an indoor-outdoor feel, allowing people to be immersed in the surrounding nature.
